NPS on campus

Hey Weary mappers. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Doug Wilder and I work for the National Park Service, Midwest Region. We're the geospatial support office for the 57 park units of the region. Our website is http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/units/mwr/.
At the recent geospatial summit here on campus, Puneet Kishor brought up a long-standing debate about geography: is is a science? With all the various disciplines that use GIS represented in the room, Puneet felt it important to point out that "geospatial" itself is a discipline. My take on it is that it's like statistics. Stats is a discipline all by itself but applies in many areas of study. So, as was suggested at the summit, a geospatial support (and research?) center of some kind might be a great addition to the UW community. Like the statistics help desks that exist at many universities, a geospatial help desk could be utilized by all sorts of folks on campus.

You know, I titled this topic "NPS on campus" because I was going to write about our our situation here on campus is in question because our cooperative agreement with the UW is up for renewal this year and there are some pressures from the regional office to move the whole operation to Omaha. I don't think that's going to happen but would like to hear from the UW geospatial community any thoughts on having the NPS as part of the campus community. (I know, I could email the SIAC list and probably will but am testing the waters here first).
Anyway, I was going to write about that but then decided to not bring it up. But, alas, I see today that I had not changed the title. But is anyone reading this anyway?
