The United States of GOOD Beer

Posted by Aaron Stephenson in Weary Mappers

I came across this map through my favorite daily hyper-local news site, Dane101. It's just a flat image in an OpenZoom frame, but I thought it was a pretty interesting subject, and one that's dear to our hearts.

Who's Going to Denver for FOSS4G 2011?

Posted by Aaron Stephenson in Weary Mappers , FOSS4G , Denver , conference

Aaron Stephenson

For the first time, the FOSS4G (Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial) conference is coming to the USA. The call for abstracts begins February 1st, and registration begins February 22.

I haven't seen the official registration prices yet, but the Welcome letter from last year indicates $595 for early birds and $695 after that.

I am tentatively planning to go. Anyone want to join me?

HTML5... and SVG in IE9?

Posted by Aaron Stephenson in Weary Mappers

Aaron Stephenson

An O'Reilly interview about HTML5.  Thankfully, no "Flash-killer" talk.  Just a sensible discussion of what to expect in HTML5 and how it compares to Flash.  Although, as always, the comments section is a bit rowdier and worth a read, too.

And IE9 will support HTML5!  Well, at least parts of it.  But one part that is exciting for us mappers is SVG, which IE hasn't supported before:

Tweets for Matt Bloch

Kudos to Matt for the truly impressive work he does at the New York Times.  He's gotten the attention of some big names in the "Neogeography" community, as shown by recent tweets from Peter Batty (Spatial Networking) and Sean Gorman (Fortius One).

God's Geography

This website is so cracked, that I'll let it speak for itself:

Have you ever wondered why Italy is shaped like a boot? This is just one of the many mysteries that I try to uncover as we search our heavenly Father's creation and His written word. There are many other recognizable shapes as well that we will look at, especially animals. I hope you'll enjoy them.

Google Maps Data API

Posted by Aaron Stephenson in Weary Mappers

Aaron Stephenson

As one commenter wrote on another blog about this... Holy Schnikies!

http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/mapsdata/

With this new Data API, you have the ability to search tabular AND spatial data in Google Maps (that is, markers, lines, and polygons and their "attributes" (meaning anything in a <customProperty> tag for a marker/line/polygon, or anything in a <Data> tag for a KML file)).

Spatial search types include box and circle.  Now, that doesn't sound like much at first to a GIS pro, but after several years of consulting I can tell you that this will satisfy 80% of a customer's needs.  And of course, this is free (until such time as Google decides to charge or insert advertising into your data or maps).

OpenScales - AS3/Flex Mapping Framework

Came across this today, thought you EarthIT folk might be interested:

Looks a lot like ESRI's ArcGIS API for Flex, but with support for OGC protocols instead of ArcGIS web services.
